VAULTS AND SHELLS - COMPARISON OF NUMERICAL AND EXACT SOLUTION
Beran P., Máca J., Kott J.
pages 15 - +6p., full text

This contribution deals with the modeling of shells. One of the possible methods how to numerically model a shell is to approximate its curved surface by several plane areas. This method is demonstrated on the numerical models of a cylindrical and conic shell. The results obtained from these models are compared with the solution of these structures by the membrane theory. If the shell is divided into a sufficient number of plane sub-areas, the results obtained by the Finite Element Method are nearly the same as those obtained by the membrane theory. The only exceptions from these results are those places of the shell support where the failures of the membrane state of stress occur.
