Numerical modeling of quarry-masonry with application to the Charles Bridge

pages 344 - +11p., full text

This paper deals with numerical modeling of quarry masonry on mesostructural (mesoscopic) level and its applications. The outputs of numerical simulations are compared with the experimental results carried out in the Klokner Institute on the same structural specimen. From the material point of view, the quarry-stone blocks and mortar joints are viewed as quasi-brittle materials. This material feature manifests itself by the macro-cracks growth and softening behavior. Describing the initiation and propagation of cracks requires the definition of fracture energy. The homogenization techniques of thermomechanical parameters (thermal conductivity and moisture permeability) applied to a periodic unit cell (PUC) are addressed in the last section. The results of this work are employed in the thermomechanical analysis of the Charles Bridge in Prague.
