The paper deals with cooling of grooved roll. The aim is to find optimal spray parameters, specify nozzle type, geometrical configuration and feeding pressure to elongate rolls working life. The problem is solved in three successive steps. The first one is a coupled thermo-deformational FE analysis with estimated values of thermal boundary conditions, which helped to make a sensitivity analysis of the problem and suggest perspective changes in the cooling system. During the second, experimental step, real boundary conditions were obtained for selected cooling strategy. In the third step, FE analysis was used again with realistic boundary conditions to evaluate the influence of optimized cooling system on thermal and stress fields in the grooved roll.
