The dispersion properties of the regular plane quadratic finite element used in the plane elastic wave propagation problems are presented and this finite element type is compared with the bilinear finite element. The regular quadratic finite elements cause occurrence of spurious frequency modes (called optical modes) in addition to physical modes (longitudinal and transverse, also called acustical modes). The optical modes are the numerical effect in the finite element discretization of the elastodynamic problems. At finish, the empirical relations for the determination of the mesh size for the both finite element types from the knowledge of the load spectrum are derived.
